Challenge

After some time at Tripadvisor, I noticed (and felt) the frustration: the lack of original content was a missed opportunity for deeper audience connection. Budget constraints were an issue, but it was clear to me—and likely to our users—that a brand like Tripadvisor needed to show up in a more authentic, original way.

Opportunity

I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started shooting Singapore’s vibrant food culture and proposed creating an editorial article and social reel to support the visuals. Partnering with a writer on the team, we developed a concept for both the article and the reel. With buy-in from the US social media and editorial teams, we worked with our European sales rep to gain access to a partner-led food tour in Singapore. Armed with cameras and a couple of interns, we captured brand-style food and restaurant photography, alongside a Reel celebrating the iconic Singaporean hawker culture.

Impact

This initiative not only raised the creative bar but also transformed our team’s role. We became the go-to team for producing in-house paid social ads, enabling us to test and iterate content faster and more cost-effectively than ever before.

The work caught attention beyond our immediate circle—leading to a partnership with Warner Music. Our success also justified hiring additional talent in other offices to support the growing demand for original video and photography.

The images and videos we have created over the last two years have been used across international brand and onsite campaigns, emails, event collaterals and B2B prjects, saving the brand money on expensive productions and has cultivated a more collaborative and hands-on creative process, that enables us to learn and refining our approach.
